Discover a never-experienced fictitious story of growing up in the agrarian South during the Civil Rights era. Set in the farming community of Corn Hollow, Tennessee, the story takes place from the early 1950's to early 1970's. Corn Hollow is told through the young African American protagonist, Tamara Banks, as she grows up with a question. While in the process of seeking answers, she stumbles upon various encounters of injustice; of race and gender, incest and poverty, alcoholism and prostitution. Due to the subject matter, this novel is more suited to high school age young adults and other adults. Parental discretion is advised for the middle grade reader.

Although Tamara's family lived an agrarian life of sharecropping and farming, her father, Daddy Al, was Corn Hollow's "white lightning" whiskey maker. His tendency toward whoredom created marital frustrations for his wife, Zettie Mae, and other family upheavals. There was inner hatred for giving birth to Tamara's very dark-skinned, smart-mouthed and truth telling sister, Althea. This combined with her personal relationship with Daddy Al, Momma Zettie Mae unleashed a heavy and regrettable beating on this daughter.

Will answers to Tamara's question ever unravel? With KKK violence in Corn Hollow as well an inner family turmoil, what is the fate of the Banks family?

Beyond the colloquial and dialectal language of this historical fiction, the reader may possibly gain several insights

1) strength to overcome difficult situations

2) awareness of the need to make this a better world that is equitable to everyone

3) perhaps to start shedding guilty thoughts and beliefs about racism

4) a heightened strength of responsibility to keep moving forward with goals

5) acquaintance as a history lover to a rural southern African American culture, while following the threads of the Civil Rights Movement in America

Corn Hollow A Journey of Sorrow and Triumph Laverne McLeod Books

This book stayed with me; I took Tamara and Althea with me as I went forward to march for women's rights. The strength of this book is in its totality, as some of the parts were difficult to follow; I sometimes was not certain which character was speaking in some paragraphs, and sometimes, got lost with the timeline. Yet, I hungered for more. Some characters are so tantalizing that I wish they had been better developed; others I could see with my own eyes. Had it not been for some of the awkwardness, I would have given the book five stars for content. For me, I found the book much more hopeful than dark, even though many of the times suffered were dark, and I love the power of community that really defines this book, along with the very powerful women in it. The men, although they had such physical power at that time, do not display as central or powerful characters to me here, in this book. Well worth reading.

Corn Hollow A Journey of Sorrow and Triumph Laverne McLeod Books Reviews

This book is truly amazing. The negative review on here obviously doesn't understand the history of black culture but I agree with the last two sentences. This book really touched my heart and I encourage everyone to read this book.
> While reading Corn Hollow, I realized I was being taken to a place I have only seen glimpses of. These glimpses were either isolated experiences or from my formal education. In this story of an American family there is a constant struggle between the adults who want and need to survive or to simply stay in their place, and the children who have an innocence to the harsh world they are living in. Yet, for the children, there is a thirst for knowledge and a yearning to want and expect more. The characters were captivating and I was truly moved! To the author , LaVerne Hillis McLeod, a job well done!
"Corn Hollow" is a truthful tale about rural life in the pre-civl rights era reminiscent of the understated drama "To Kill A Mockingbird". Persistence and perseverance, words whose meaning cannot be learned too early in life, carry young Tamara Banks from a subsistence living and the trials of life in a rural Southern community to her goal of a college education. McLeod's book is as well written as any book that I have read on the New York Times Bestsellers List.
According to a Cherokee proverb, we shouldn't judge a man until we walk a mile in his shoes. CORN HOLLOW is the opportunity to walk in the shoes of Tamara, a small black child. She paints a vivid picture of family and community life against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South.

It is an inspiring story showing the strength and endurance of the characters, their personal journeys from the 1950's through the Civil Rights era and beyond to adulthood. Their ability to become self-actualized people, able to forgive, and move on to create a better world for themselves and others, is a call to action in today's tense culturally divided and fearful world where we have forgotten to walk in one another's footsteps.
